Digging out a basement is going to be very tricky, and potentially undermine the foundations of the houses on either side. From looking at the age of the buildings I would hazard a guess that they do not have very deep foundations, unlike more modern buildings. Therefore the any damage to their neighbouring properties is going to add considerably to the cost of this property. Why didn't they just go and buy somewhere that didn't involve this expensive and potentially damaging work and ongoing disputes with the people they are expecting to live with for the next however many years?
